Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park

The canopy walk in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park is a thrilling experience, set 70 metres above the lush rainforest on a 160-metre-long suspended bridge. This guided walk, which lasts about two hours, offers visitors a breathtaking perspective of one of Africa’s most biodiverse rainforests.

Nyungwe Forest is home to a wide array of wildlife, including the critically endangered chimpanzee and 12 other primate species. The forest also boasts over 1,000 tree species, 300 bird species, as well as numerous amphibians and reptiles, making it a haven for nature lovers.

The canopy walk is available for individuals aged six and above at a cost of $60 per person. While children as young as six can participate, it’s recommended they be accompanied by an adult. The walk is available year-round but is more enjoyable during Rwanda’s dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, when conditions are less slippery.

The canopy walk begins at the Uwinka Reception Centre, where visitors receive a briefing and are paired with a guide. From there, you’ll embark on the 2.1 km Igishigishigi Trail, which leads to the suspended bridge. Although the trail involves some hiking, it’s manageable even for beginners, with only a few challenging spots due to rocky terrain.

Scheduled walks take place at 8am, 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. It’s essential to come prepared with hiking boots, a rain jacket, water, snacks (especially for children), and a camera to capture the stunning views. If you’re unwell or have a medical condition, it’s advisable to skip the walk and explore other safari activities in the park.

For thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts, the canopy walk offers an exciting adventure. The walkway, built by USAID through the Green Heart NGO in 2010, is safe and well-maintained, with three sections—one 90 metres long and 70 metres high, and two shorter sections at 45 and 25 metres.

Nyungwe National Park, located in southwestern Rwanda, is about a five to six-hour drive from Kigali, with well-maintained roads providing easy access. The park offers a variety of activities beyond the canopy walk, including chimpanzee trekking, bird watching, waterfall hikes, and nature walks. Visitors can also explore nearby tea plantations to experience Rwanda’s renowned tea production and engage with local communities.

For a truly immersive experience, plan a visit to Nyungwe National Park and take part in its many exciting activities, including the unforgettable canopy walk.
