Discover Uganda’s Best Wildlife Parks

 1. Murchison Falls National Park

Established in 1952, it is home to over 76 mammal species, including chimpanzees, giraffes, lions, and Nile crocodiles, alongside 450 bird species like the endangered shoebill stork. Visitors can enjoy activities such as guided nature walks, boat rides on the Nile, game drives, birdwatching, rhino tracking, and hot air balloon safaris.  2. Kidepo Valley National Park

Often referred to as Uganda’s Masai Mara, Kidepo Valley National Park spans 1,442 square kilometres in the northeastern part of the country. Established in 1962, the park is home to 77 mammal species and 475 bird species, including the striking ostrich and secretary bird. Visitors can partake in birdwatching, hiking, and both morning and night game drives. Kidepo’s stunning landscapes feature semi-arid savanna, seasonal rivers, and the breathtaking Lomej Hills.

 3. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The smallest national park in Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers just 34 square kilometres in Kisoro district. Established in 1991, it boasts three stunning volcanic peaks: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabinyo. Visitors can engage in gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, and explore the Batwa culture through community visits.

 4. Lake Mburo National Park

Located just 228 kilometres from Kampala, Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest savannah park in Uganda, spanning 370 square kilometres. Inaugurated in 1983, it offers a variety of activities, including boat cruises on Lake Mburo, horseback riding, mountain biking, and game drives. The park’s diverse ecosystems are home to a variety of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, and over 300 bird species.

 5. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Named after Queen Elizabeth II in 1954, this expansive park covers about 1,980 square kilometres in the western region. Known for its unique tree-climbing lions and the picturesque Kazinga Channel, Queen Elizabeth National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, featuring 95 mammal species and 600 bird species. Popular activities include boat cruises, game drives, chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge, and cultural experiences.

 6. Semuliki National Park

Nestled in the Bundibugyo district, Semuliki National Park spans 220 square kilometres and borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Home to 53 animal species and 441 bird species, it offers unique experiences like hiking, nature walks, and cultural interactions. The park’s diverse ecosystems are rich with wildlife, including forest elephants and monkeys.

 7. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is renowned for its population of 468 mountain gorillas. Spanning 331 square kilometres, the park offers exceptional opportunities for gorilla trekking, birdwatching, and cultural experiences with the Batwa community. Established in 1991, it is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

 8. Kibale National Park

Located near Fort Portal, Kibale National Park covers 795 square kilometres and is known for its rich biodiversity, housing 375 bird species and 13 primate species, including the famous chimpanzee. Visitors can participate in activities such as hiking, natural walks, and cultural visits to engage with local communities.
