Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is a breathtaking and thrilling safari destination, renowned for offering some of the best gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. Located in the northwest of Rwanda, the park shares borders with Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. Established in 1925, it was Africa’s first national park and protects the steep slopes of several volcanoes, including Gahinga, Bisoke, Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Karisimbi. The park is famously home to Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, as well as other species like golden monkeys and a variety of bird species.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a must-do activity and offers one of the best opportunities to see mountain gorillas in the wild. Trekkers follow gorilla tracks deep into the forest, guided by park rangers. Each gorilla group is led by a dominant silverback, and groups of visitors, limited to eight people, embark on this unique adventure after an orientation session at the park headquarters.

The trek to find the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours. Once located, visitors are allowed to spend one hour with the gorillas, observing their behaviour as they eat, groom, nurse their young, and rest. This is an exhilarating experience, and trekkers can take photographs during this time, though the use of flash is prohibited as it may disturb the gorillas. Capturing these moments creates lasting memories of one of Africa’s most thrilling wildlife experiences.

 Gorilla Trekking Permits

A gorilla trekking permit is required to participate in the trek and is issued by the Rwanda Development Board. The permit costs $1,500 per person and is available to individuals aged 15 and above. While the permit fee in Rwanda is higher compared to Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the experience is highly regarded and worth the investment.

How to Book a Gorilla Trekking Permit

Permits can be booked directly through the Rwanda Development Board or via a trusted tour operator. When booking, it’s essential to specify the dates you plan to trek. Booking through a tour company is often recommended, as they can handle all the logistics, including purchasing permits and organising the safari experience.

Best Time to Book a Permit

Due to high demand, especially during peak seasons (January, February, June, July, August, September, and December), it’s advised to book your gorilla trekking permit 3 to 6 months in advance to avoid disappointment.
