LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS

Rwanda Wildlife Tours

Despite its legacy, these days Rwanda is a country of hope, beauty and prosperity. The likelihood is that if you’re on holiday here, it’s to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most exciting encounters of my life,” for many this is the ultimate wildlife experience. Indeed, little else is comparable to standing a few meters from these magnificent yet peaceful primates

Rwanda provides exceptional wildlife safaris where guests get to see the big 5 animals which are the lions, African leopards, African bush elephant, African buffalo and rhinos. The nation’s wildlife areas are made up of smaller wild creatures in addition to the Big 5. Make reservations for your once-in-a-lifetime safari to Rwanda’s wildlife parks.

Rwanda is endowed with a wealth of wildlife, which may be found in its four national parks: Akagera National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Gishwati Mukura National Park, and Nyungwe Forest National Park. Great wildlife attractions can be found in each of these national parks.

Volcanoes national park.

The most popular national park is the Volcanoes National Park, which is conveniently accessible from Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali, about two hours away. The Volcanoes National Park is spread across 160 square kilometres, or around 62 square miles, and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species that are flourishing in their natural habitats. Volcanoes National Park is well-known for harboring several hundred of the world’s few surviving mountain gorillas. Visitors to the National Park of Volcanoes may opt to trek with the mountain gorillas; a permit costs $1,500 USD for this day in the wild.

When going on an excursion around the park, you can also see other types of monkeys, such as golden monkeys, in addition to the mountain gorillas. To trek the golden monkeys, you must pay $100 USD for a permit. In the Volcanoes National Park, spotted hyenas have also been sighted.

In addition, there have been sightings of forest elephants and bush bucks, whose numbers are believed to be between 1,760 and 7,000. Although they are uncommon sightings, visitors to the park who are fortunate enough may be able to see them.

Nyungwe forest national park.

CANOPY WALK NYUNGWE FOREST

One of Rwanda’s most biologically varied locations is the Nyungwe Forest National Park, which is situated within the Nyungwe Forest. Near the land borders of Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, lies the southern region of Rwanda, home to the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Chimpanzees live in the Nyungwe forest, and most visitors seeking to see wildlife in this region of the nation opt to do chimpanzee trekking safari, for which a permit costs ninety dollars per person. Situated across an estimated 970 square kilometres, Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to 13 additional species of primates, roughly 85 animals, 38 species of reptiles, and roughly 32 species of amphibians a far greater variety of fauna than one might often find in a park of this size.

When visiting the Nyungwe Forest National Park, you may see chimpanzees, grey-cheeked mangabeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and Angola colobus, to name a few wildlife species. As one of Africa’s hotspots for conservation, the Nyungwe forest is a highly prioritized area. A family of chimpanzees lives in the nearby Gishwati Mukura national park, which is adjacent to the Nyungwe forest. In this 34 square kilometer national park, you can also see golden, L’Hoest’s, and blue monkeys.

Gishwati Mukura National Park.

Gishwati Mukura, Rwanda’s fourth national park, spans 34 square kilometres and includes a buffer zone. It is composed of two distinct forests, the larger Gishwati and the smaller Mukura. The forests are located in the highly biodiverse Albertine Rift in the west of the country, on the ridge that separates the water catchment zones of the Congo and the Nile. It is composed of sixty different species of trees, including bamboo and native hardwoods.

Gishwati is dwelling to a group of 20 chimpanzees which live alongside golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s and Blue Monkeys. There is also a good representation of birds; 232 species have been observed at Gishwati and 163 in Mukura. These include species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift and forest specialists. In 2019, the park opened for guided nature hikes, guided chimpanzee and monkey tracking, bird watching, and waterfall visits.
