Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is world-renowned for its gorilla trekking opportunities and is considered one of the best places on the planet for this extraordinary experience. Each day, 160 permits are available, offering visitors the chance to engage with these magnificent creatures in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.

Bwindi Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers 131 square kilometres (128 square miles) of ancient montane and lowland forest, home to a range of endangered species. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s second gorilla park, spans 12 square miles of forest, bamboo groves, and mountainous terrain, including the striking Virunga peaks of Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo. This transboundary ecosystem is shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Beyond gorilla trekking, both parks offer a range of activities, including birdwatching, nature walks, and community visits, as well as gorilla habituation experiences. The availability of gorilla trekking permits depends on the sector and season, with peak periods from June to August and December to February requiring early bookings due to high demand.

Gorilla Trekking Costs in Uganda

The cost of gorilla trekking in Uganda varies depending on the season and your accommodation preferences. A gorilla trekking permit is approximately $700, which contributes significantly to conservation efforts, community development, and the protection of wildlife corridors. About 75% of the permit fee is allocated to conservation, 15% goes to the government, and 10% supports local communities.

Your accommodation choices during a gorilla trekking experience range from budget-friendly lodges to luxurious retreats. While some high-end lodges can cost up to $2,500 per night for a double suite, there are also more affordable options available, with rates as low as $50 per night.
